WHICH PHOTOS WORK BEST
A good reference photo makes all the difference in creating a portrait that truly captures your loved one. The clearer and more detailed, the better — but don’t worry, you don’t need to be a professional photographer. A few tips can go a long way:
ANGLE: A slightly turned, 3/4 angle usually works beautifully — it gives depth and shows form. Side views can also be charming.
LIGHTING WITH CONTRAST: Look for photos with clear light and some shadows — highlights, contrast, and dramatic light make a portrait feel alive. A strong light source coming from one side is ideal.
MAKE SURE THE WHOLE HEAD IS IN THE FRAME: Make sure your loved one’s whole head is visible. Cropped heads can be tricky to work with!
EXPRESSION: Natural, relaxed expressions that capture personality are best! Candids are wonderful.
AVOID: Selfies, heavy filters, blurry shots, blown-out lighting, or big areas of deep shadow. (Basically, anything that makes you squint or guess what’s going on.)
